Midmark launches new division with innovation in mind, all the time

by Schutte on April 12, 2012

Founded in 1915 in Versailles, Ohio, 40 miles northwest of Dayton, Midmark Corporation has grown into a global leader and solutions provider in the healthcare industry, including medical, dental, and veterinary markets.

The privately-held company enjoys a significant leadership position in the physician’s office market. It estimates that its award-winning examination and diagnostic operatory products are utilized by more than 500,000 physicians thoughout the U.S. Midmark employs more than 1,500 teammates in 13 facilities located around the globe.

But when you speak with Midmark Medical Director Tom Schwieterman, MD, it’s obvious the company is not satisfied with success.

In what he calls “the fruition of an 8-year process of promoting innovation at Midmark,” the company launched Midmark Connect in late 2010 and established an office in West Chester, Ohio, last November. With a staff of five, including Dr. Schwieterman, the new division is highly focused on building upon the innovation already occurring at Midmark, while also pursuing new services and technology opportunities. An “open innovation” philosophy leads Midmark Connect’s efforts.

“We want to leverage Midmark’s expertise, market share, and access to the exam space to commercialize technologies originating inside and outside Midmark,” Schwieterman said. Specifically, they are seeking partners in diagnostic sensors, cloud-based disease management applications, and ideas that reduce readmissions, enable efficiencies, and improve outcomes.

An example of the Midmark Connect approach is last year’s launch of the SleepView Monitor and SleepView Portal, developed by Cleveland Medical Devices and licensed to Midmark.

Between Dr. Schwieterman, V.P. Jeff Wells, and Director of Business Development David Claire, at least one Midmark Connect exec makes the 90-minute trip north to Midmark headquarters each week. And corporate leadership periodically visits the new division’s open, modern digs for a different perspective.

After considering locations around the world for Midmark Connect, the Cincinnati area ultimately was chosen for its regional health care assets and talent base.

“We could have placed this office anywhere,” Schwieterman said. “But we all recognized that Ohio is an incredibly attractive place to start something like this, to tap into the wealth of health care knowledge and collaboration. That drove the investment.”
